AUTOMOTIVE

In today’s automotive industry, the immobilizer system has become a standard feature worldwide, with nearly all cars sold since 2000 incorporating this technology. The immobilizer, or smart-key system, is an electronic security device designed to prevent theft and enhance safety for drivers and owners. To start the engine, the driver requires a car key equipped with an RFID transponder, which is far more secure and difficult to replicate compared to traditional mechanical blade keys. Advanced RFID chips, such as those provided by Silicon Craft, play a key role in enabling this technology. By significantly reducing car theft rates, the immobilizer system is a cornerstone of modern vehicle security.

Silicon Craft has developed immobilizers and transponders compatible with a wide range of automotive models, ensuring outstanding versatility and broad adoption across the industry. Our SIC61 series is specifically engineered to meet the rigorous AEC-Q100 standard for automotive-grade electronic components. These ICs are built to withstand the demanding conditions of the automotive environment, ensuring long-term reliability and functionality of the RFID transponders throughout the vehicle’s lifetime, while delivering exceptional safety and performance.

Concept/How it works

The smart key contains an RFID Transponder that operates on a rolling code system, synchronizing with the car’s ECU for secure authentication.

When the driver inserts the key, the immobilizer system activates. The ECU sends a signal to the key, which then sends a return signal back for secure authentication before starting the engine.

The engine can start only if the code in the microchip inside the key matches with the code in the ECU in the car.
